Geographic information systems (GIS) is a technology-based set of mapping tools that can be applied to almost any field, including viticulture. This course is designed for viticulture professionals, including viticulturalists, viticulture technicians, grape growers, winemakers, harvest interns and operational technicians. Through a series of lectures, demonstrations and guided computer workshops, you’ll gain an overview of basic GIS concepts used in the viticulture industry. You’ll get experience creating, editing and visualizing GIS data in ArcGIS Pro software and learn practical applications to viticulture and grape growing, such as making map layouts and series for vineyard block maps or creating georeferenced maps for field scouting.

- Make a professional map layout in ArcGIS Pro, including map frame, north arrow, scale bar, inset map, legend and text elements (demonstrations and hands-on computer lab)
- Publish data to ArcGIS Online and make a shareable web map (lecture demonstration only)
Skills You’ll Gain
- GIS editing – data creation, editing and visualization in ArcGIS Pro (e.g., block polygons, vine rows, wind machine points, hedgerows, etc.)
- Basic spatial analysis like buffers to creeks or roads (calculating row length for irrigation budgeting, etc.)
- Basic cartography for layouts in ArcGIS Pro (e.g., creating a map layout with relevant information and labels for sharing with field crew)
- Creating Map Series Pages for multiple properties or multiple blocks
- Accessing soils data or other relevant data like NAIP imagery in ESRI's Living Atlas
- Analyzing insect trap data (finding clusters, hot spots analysis, etc.)
- Navigating between ArcGIS and Google Earth to collaborate with colleagues
