Created by UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education and hosted on the Coursera platform, this is an online course consisting of pre-recorded video lectures, auto-graded and peer-reviewed assignments and community discussion forums. This specialization program is self-paced and designed to help you master a specific career skill in as little as 4-6 months. This specialization, offered in collaboration with Tableau, is intended for newcomers to data visualization with no prior experience using Tableau. We leverage Tableau's library of resources to demonstrate best practices for data visualization and data storytelling. You will view examples from real world business cases and journalistic examples from leading media companies.

By the end of this specialization, you will be able to generate powerful reports and dashboards that will help people make decisions and take action based on their business data. You will use Tableau to create high-impact visualizations of common data analyses to help you see and understand your data. You will apply predicative analytics to improve business decision making. The Specialization culminates in a Capstone Project in which you will use sample data to create visualizations, dashboards and data models to prepare a presentation to the executive leadership of a fictional company.

Govind Acharya

Govind Acharya is a Principal Analyst in the UC Davis Budget and Institutional Office. In his position, he is responsible for developing and implementing data visualizations on a variety of institutional related data such as classroom utilization, faculty, staff, and students. At Ithaca College, he developed some of the first Tableau dashboards and developed a set of best practices still in use today. He is a graduate of the University of California, San Diego and did his graduate work at San Francisco State University and Cornell University in Economics. He is on the Board of Directors of Amnesty International USA, the world’s largest and best known human rights organizations.

Suk S. Brar

Suk S. Brar is an extremely talented business intelligence professional with over 10+ years of experience in statistical and predictive analyses, data forecasting, and data visualization. He has worked in various industries in his career, spanning from the traffic safety, to the optical industry, and now healthcare. His passion in data analytics has led to various research publications on traffic safety and human behavior, and more recently his focus is on telling stories with data through effective and informative data visualizations. Suk holds a B.S. in Psychology from UC Davis, a M.A. from California State University, Sacramento, and an M.B.A. from UC Davis.

Hunter Whitney

Hunter Whitney is a consultant, author, and instructor who brings a distinct UX design perspective to data visualization. He has advised corporations, start-ups, government agencies, and NGOs to achieve their goals through a thoughtful, strategic design approach to digital products and services. Hunter is the author of "Data Insights: New Ways to Visualize and Make Sense of Data”. He was also asked to contribute a chapter in the book, “Designing for Emerging Technologies: UX for Genomics, Robotics, and the Internet of Things”. Additionally, Hunter has written numerous articles covering a range of subjects for various online and print publications including UX Magazine. On a more personal level, there are two main drivers behind what he does – curiosity and the joy of creating something new or making something that already exists even better.
