GIS for Forestry Application

Online

Effectively managing forest resources has become more important than ever, and geographic information systems (GIS) is an important tool in that effort. In this course designed for GIS practitioners and planners in the public and private sectors, you will learn how to utilize GIS in forestry planning, mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.

Through lecture, hands-on work and a review of case studies, you will learn how to find and use forestry data, as well as take advantage of a variety of relevant ArcGIS Online features. You’ll then learn how to apply these skills and tools in support of common forestry-related projects, including: remote sensing for forest health and trend assessment, wildland fire risk analysis, and soils analysis for reforestation and erosion mitigation. You will also learn how to utilize GIS tools to assess the impacts of climate change and deforestation.

By the end of this course you will have a completed project that synthesizes the concepts you learned and demonstrates your ability apply this knowledge not only in forestry applications, but within a variety of ecosystems as well.
