Mark Your Winter Calendar

January 10 - 11, OLLI will host our first overnight road trip!

Registration is now open for OLLI’s upcoming January 10-11 excursion to the Monterey Peninsula!

This trip is limited to 30 participants. Registration will close December 12 due to hotel reservation requirements.

Migrating Monarchs and Frolicking Otters

Day one will include a motor coach ride to the coast and a pasta/salad lunch in Salinas, followed by an afternoon visit to the Pacific Grove Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary, an outdoor reserve where monarchs overwinter in notable clusters. Local docents will assist visitors in locating butterfly clusters amongst the groves of eucalyptus, pine and cypress trees.

Those who wish to do so may briefly visit the nearby Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History and its deeply diverse collection of the Central Coast’s flora, fauna and historical artifacts. (Others may stay longer at the monarch reserve or be taken to the hotel to check in one hour earlier than planned.)

After check-in at the Marriott Monterey Hotel, participants will have personal time for a no-host dinner at any of several nearby restaurants.

On day two, after a hosted continental breakfast at the hotel, we’ll travel to Moss Landing for an excursion led by Monterey Bay Eco-Tours. We’ll board an electric-powered catamaran for a narrated cruise with a naturalist along the Elkhorn Slough, a vibrant and lively wetland, and one of the state’s largest tidal waterways. The slough is particularly notable for its population of sea otters. The otters of the Elkhorn Slough have pups year-round! There’s an excellent chance to see a mom playing with her pup.

After a stop for a no-host lunch, our motor coach will make the return trip to Davis and West Sacramento.

Note: This is a non-refundable excursion. The bus will pick up participants at the UC Davis International Center. Overnight parking plans are the responsibility of each participant. Departure times and details will be provided via email. The height of the monarch migration coincides with California’s rainy season. Variably wet weather and winds are to be expected for the duration of the journey. In the event the Elkhorn Slough boat tour is cancelled by the vendor due to extreme inclement weather, a partial refund will be returned to participants.

PLEASE NOTE: There are two different fees (single occupancy or double occupancy) available for this trip. Our registration software design necessitated two different course codes for registration:

*Participants who wish to book a double occupancy room should make arrangements in advance to share their room with a friend, partner or spouse, with two separate registrations to course 233SNR304. OLLI staff are unable to make room assignments for shared rooms.
